Debate Reflection

In humanities class my started to experiment with having debates on current event topics. So far we have debated over, capital punishment and, U.S intervention in Libya. At first I liked the idea of the debates, then I chose a side and as soon as I started researching I wanted to change my side. I think that in the future we should be given time to do research before picking a side.

We are given around a week before then debates to prep our selfs on the topic. I usually feel anxious and pressured before the debates not matter how much I have researched. I am usually pretty good at getting my point across but when it is on a self personal subject I have a harder time articulating my thoughts. The debates start in groups of two where debate with your partner for around ten minutes. Some people like to declare that they have won but I don’t understand that because what is there to win? I thought that this was about expressing arguments from each side. Then we sit around a table as a whole group and continue to discuss the topic. At the end once we finished debating we chose a new topic.

In the beginning I like the idea of the debates. Though now I don’t really like them because I am always out spoken and sometimes I don’t come prepared. Our next  debate is not really a debate it is more like a conversation about What is an Adult? When do you become and an adult? and what are the privileges and responsibilities of an adult?
